iplay cannot use SMS

I purchased a iplay50 in Japan.
I am using it with a sim that I signed up for an au (KDDI) plan (data only) from mvno, but I cannot use sms.
When I go to Settings – Network and Internet – Calls and SMS, SMS is grayed out and cannot be set up.
Please let me know if there is a way to set it up to be usable.
